Calling all budding artists aged 3 to 18! As part of the Archibald Prize 2025 regional tour, the Mudgee Arts Precinct invites you to enter the Young Archie Competition. This is your chance to showcase your creativity and celebrate someone special in your life through portraiture.

About the Competition

Create a portrait of a person who is special to you—someone you know and who plays a significant role in your life. We encourage portraits to be painted from life, but you may also work from memory or your own photographs.

Entry Categories:

  • Pre-school age (young entrants who have not yet started school)
  • 5–8 years
  • 9–12 years
  • 13–15 years
  • 16–18 years

Judging & Prizes

Entries will be judged on merit and originality by:

  • The Mudgee Arts Precinct Gallery Curator
  • Local artists Sam Paine and Kim Harding

Five finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Gallery and online. One winner per category will receive prizes provided by the Art Gallery of NSW.

Artwork Requirements

  • One artwork per entrant
  • Any art materials, but must be two-dimensional
  • Size: Must be A3 (420 x 297 mm), no thicker than 1cm 
  • Clearly label the back with your name, age, and contact details

 

How to Enter

  1. Download and complete the entry form, including a short statement (under 100 words) about your chosen subject.
  2. Artwork must be sent flat (not folded or rolled), ideally between cardboard for protection.
  3. If you want your artwork returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
  4. Deliver or mail entries to:

    Mudgee Arts Precinct, 90 Market Street, Mudgee NSW 2850

    In person deliveries to be made on Tuesday 10 March 2026 between 9am and 4pm

Key Dates

  • Competition Opens: Monday 12 January 2026
  • Entries close: 5.00pm Tuesday 10 March 2026
  • Finalists announced: Friday 13 March 2026 – online
  • Winners announced and exhibition opening: Friday 20 March 2026 between 6.00pm and 8.00pm at Mudgee Arts Precinct
  • Finalists will be displayed: Friday 20 March – 3 May 2026 upstairs at Mudgee Arts Precinct
