How do artists develop a deeper understanding of the landscapes they paint?
This workshop invites participants to explore colour as more than appearance. Through observation, pigment studies and layered painting processes, you will discover how colour can reveal the unique character of place.

Drawing on Dr Natalie Leontaris O'Connor's practice-based research into pigment and material colour, the workshop begins with close observation of the surrounding landscape before moving into the studio to investigate the behaviour of artists' pigments. Participants will experiment with transparency, opacity, staining and layering to develop a personal palette that responds to the colours, atmosphere and geology of the local environment.

Suitable for art educators through to experienced artists, this workshop encourages curiosity, experimentation and a deeper appreciation of colour as both material and experience.

Participants will leave with a series of colour studies, a personal palette inspired by place, practical knowledge of pigments and techniques, and the beginnings of a layered landscape painting developed through observation rather than photographic reference.
