Mudgee Arts Precinct is proud to present David Hockney: Temporary Spaces by renowned international artist, David Hockney, the second exhibition in a two-year loan as part of the Australian Government's Sharing the National Collection initiative from the National Gallery of Australia.

Home to the most valuable collection of art in Australia, the National Gallery of Australia's collection contains over 155,000 works of art, including the extensive Kenneth Tyler Print Collection comprising over 7,400 works by leading 20th century artists from 1966 through to 2001 and some of the finest examples of Pop Art held in an Australian collection.

This landmark initiative brings 41 significant artworks from the National Gallery of Australia to Mudgee, showcasing some of the most iconic names in international art. Over the two years, visitors to Mudgee Arts Precinct will enjoy four major exhibitions beginning with Icons of Pop Art: Warhol and Lichtenstein (24 October 2025 – 15 March 2026). The second exhibition David Hockney: Temporary Spaces (20 March 2026 – 20 September 2026) will feature works by renowned British artist David Hockney, including three pieces from his Paper Pool series (1978). This will be followed by an exhibition of Lichtenstein’s Bull series (26 September 2026 – 14 February 2027) and finally, works by Willem de Kooning, Maurice Sendak, Masami Teraoka, Helen Frankenthaler and Frank Stella in Beyond the Frame (20 February 2027 – August 2027).

David Hockney (born 1937) is a British painter, draftsman, and printmaker, is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Associated with the Pop Art movement in the 1960s, he is best known for his vibrant depictions of California life, especially swimming pools, modern architecture and sunlit landscapes. Hockney has consistently experimented with perspective and visual perception, working across media such as painting, photography, stage design, and later, digital art using iPads.

The artworks by Hockney coming to Mudgee Arts Precinct include works from 1978 through to a large iPad drawing of Yosemite from 2011. It includes three works from his iconic Paper Pool series from 1978, produced with master printer, Kenneth Tyler.
